Describe the hedge, get the price

Put the length, the height and the condition in the booking: a 15-metre boundary hedge at shoulder height that was trimmed last season is a very different job from a three-metre wall of griselinia nobody has touched in two years. Add whether it needs doing from both sides, and whether the neighbour's side is accessible. The price shows before you confirm.

Boundary hedges and neighbours

New Zealand has no general right to light, so a neighbour's tall hedge isn't unlawful just because it shades your windows. What the Property Law Act does allow is an application to the District Court to have trees or hedges trimmed or removed where they're causing undue harm. Most disputes never get near that, because you can cut branches that overhang your side back to the boundary yourself.

Hedges at rental properties

Under Tenancy Services' default split, mowing and weeding are the tenant's job, but pruning trees, shrubs and hedges, and removing the cuttings, falls to the landlord. A specific clause in the tenancy agreement can change that, so check it before either side books.
